Sourcegraph is a code AI platform that makes it easy to read, write, and fix code–even in big, complex code bases.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to make it so everyone codes.

A world where everyone, not just ~0.1% of the world population, codes will see faster and more broadly beneficial technological progress.

But coding is already too complex for most people to start coding, and it’s only getting worse as consumers demand more from software and code piles up. We’re making it less complex. That will make more people able to code.

Working hours

-----------------

🌎 Given that we are an all-remote company and hire almost anywhere in the world, we don’t have a particular time-zone preference for this role. However, you may need to be available for non-recurring urgent meetings outside of working hours.

Why this job is exciting

----------------------------

Cody is the best AI coding assistant today, and you'll get to help build it and get it in the hands of millions of devs. Our code intelligence, married with modern AI, is already providing a remarkable alpha experience, and you can help us unlock its full potential.

Our rapid development pace means that building and releasing our products to the market is a unique challenge, from overseeing the release of all components supporting Cody as well as Cody itself, building the tools to provide a self-service experience to all teammates, to taking part in building a quality infrastructure to monitor Cody quality.

We are looking for a Senior Release Engineer to join the Developer Infrastructure team to take our release process to the next level, turning it into a seamless process for everyone, maximizing the ownership of individual teams with a platform based approach.

By joining our team, you will directly impact how Cody and our Code Intelligence platform is released to the world and be at the crossroads of all Sourcegraph teams by building mission critical tools to support our mission.  If you’re passionate about enhancing developers’ productivity and are excited to be a part of a dynamic team pushing the boundaries of technology, then this role is for you.

📅 Within one month, you will…

  • Begin building relationships with cross-functional teams, including the Cody development team and other stakeholders.
  • Dive into the codebase of Cody and Code Intelligence platform, gaining a deep understanding of the existing code, architecture, and dependencies.

📅 Within three months, you will…

  • Implement improvements that result in a measurable reduction in the time it takes to release new versions of Cody and the Code Intelligence platform while higher-level insights on architecture, scalability, and customer focus.
  • Establish strong working relationships with Security teams, ensuring that the release process incorporates necessary security measures.
  • Actively participate in code reviews and discussions to contribute higher-level insights on architecture, scalability, and customer focus.

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Contribute to the development of a robust and scalable infrastructure for monitoring Cody's quality, performance, and user experience.
  • Implement proactive alerting and monitoring systems to detect issues before they impact customers.

📅 Within one year, you will…

  • Successfully evolve the release process into a mature platform, enabling teams across Sourcegraph to manage their releases independently.
  • Proactively propose additions and changes to the team's roadmap, aligning it with the broader goals of Sourcegraph.

About you

-------------

  • You’re a software engineer first, but you have a passion for working on the boundaries between software and the underlying infrastructure. You might have some past experience as an SRE, developing tooling for other developers, or jumping between the two.
  • You're just as comfortable designing distributed systems as you are methodically debugging a complex performance issue with skills you have honed from years of experience.
  • You understand the software lifecycle, from design, to coding, to docs, as well as the maintenance lifecycle over time. You've experienced it in its entirety at least once in your career.
  • You don't write code for the sake of it, but to provide value to our customers by solving problems.
  • You value integrity and teamwork. Your strong sense of empathy helps you understand your peers' challenges and you sharply understand how to balance solving current and future problems, carving a path to implement your vision. You're able to work effectively across teams to solve complex problems with multiple stakeholders.
  • You understand your role in the company and how you contribute to its success or failures. You have a strong sense of ownership and a healthy sense of urgency. You  understand that this is your company now.
  • Your sense of ownership extends to the software that you ship to your customers. You understand that your code is likely the first impression many customers have of your company, and you often pause to consider the customer experience during development.
  • You do work you are proud of and your work is respected by your peers as well as the broader community.

Skills

  • You're highly proficient at writing Go and likely experienced in other languages as well.
  • You've had experience setting up delivery and build pipelines of various sizes. You know the challenges of shipping software at scale and how to overcome them.
  • You have deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including working and developing with Kubernetes APIs and internals such as CRDs and controllers.
  • Bonus: You have experience with database internals and complex schema migrations.
  • Bonus: You have worked with Bazel or other build systems in large polyglot codebases.

It doesn't matter if you're not an expert on all points, what really counts is that you understand the complexities of releasing software, and thrive to make it a seamless experience for both our customers and our teammates. Ultimately, you can jump in at any point in the software lifecycle and understand how to fix issues.

+ extending our code graph to cover an ever growing set of languages with every easier configuration

+ a scalable system for syncing any type of data relevant for Cody or Code Search data

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Champion customer engagement in all phases of design, development and deployment.

📅 Within one year, you will…

  • Have hired and retained exceptional people to make our team even more representative of the world’s population.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to develop the next set of ambitious goals that your org should work towards.
  • Develop a clear technical and execution strategy to achieve that next set of goals.

About you

When it comes to proving the value we provide for our customers, we choose to “show, not tell.”

We believe In learning and the power of “yet”

We believe In learning and the power of “yet”

We believe that through curiosity and dedication to learning we can overcome challenges, build skills and create solutions that are not possible . . . yet.

We believe starting from first principles gives us the courage to think differently.

We believe starting from first principles gives us the courage to think differently.

We always rely on a first principles approach to understand and solve problems. Once we build conviction in what is true, we build a solution from that foundation.

We believe being human means recognizing the humanity in ourselves and others.

We commit to continuously being better.

We strive to exceed our customers, partners and community's expectations.

Our curiosity drives us to do better.

We are inspired by yesterday, but create for tomorrow.
Direct & transparent

Direct & transparent

We communicate directly and operate transparently (internally) by default, which helps us move fast and make good decisions. We proactively give and receive candid feedback out of respect for each other. We respond positively to directness and transparency because the alternative is worse: not hearing feedback, waiting longer to hear the same information, or having less valuable input into a decision. We are willing to disagree and commit.
Win together

Win together

Each of us is an owner here in two ways: of our work and of the company (as team members and shareholders). We all win only if the entire company wins, which calls for the right balance of collaboration and ownership. Too little collaboration causes chaos and brings disappointing results. Too much collaboration crushes ownership and dulls outcomes. As owners of the company, we speak up when something is wrong (even when it’s hard) and help create an environment where we respectfully consider every voice.
High agency

High agency

If all Sourcegraph teammates, except for one, got stranded on a desert island without internet access for a month, we know that person would figure out how to keep Sourcegraph running and serving our customers. We are self-motivated. Everyone here has a high degree of autonomy and freedom, which requires hard work, responsibility, initiative, fast iteration, and optimism in the face of challenges. We think and act like owners of our work and hold each other accountable to do the same so we can do the best work of our lives.
Dev love

Dev love

Everything we do is ultimately for devs (anyone who codes). Every dollar we earn comes from devs trying, using, loving, fighting for, and sharing our product. All Sourcegraph teammates code to better understand our users and customers and to do their job better (in ways that make sense for their role). Our long-term mission is to make it so everyone codes, not just the 0.1% of the world’s population who are devs—just like universal literacy.
Ownership

Ownership

Doing WHATEVER IT TAKES

Everyone is an owner at Starburst and has the autonomy to make a significant impact on where we are today and where we are going. Regardless of the role you perform here, we want drivers.
